Is Dancing The Pathway To Senior Health?

Whether you're a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars", or you just like to jam out when no one is looking, dancing is ingrained into people's instincts. Even just a tap of the foot gets us more involved with the music we hear at the moment. It's no different when we're older. In fact, there may even be medical benefits from hitting the dance floor.

US News explores the correlation between dancing and senior health. Arthur Murray Dance Center in Silver Spring, MD, encourages their couples of all ages to get groovy without strict enforcements of the rules of rhythm. Many of these dance students are seniors over 70 years old. As one student of age 74 says, dancing gets her heart rate up, and it's something she enjoys as opposed to the treadmill.

Dr. Natasha Falcon, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician with Rothman Institute Orthopedics, says that dancing absolutely brings health benefits for older adults. Ballroom dancing can strengthen your bones in a similar fashion to weight-bearing exercise. In addition, posture and form are both added bonuses that seniors could benefit from.

So, get your dancing shoes on! It doesn't matter your age. Dancing can bring happiness, energy, excitement, and health into our lives.
